Beautiful Balloons—
Hot Air Balloon Events
By: Amber Stephens

When Mindi Gliatti surprised her husband, Mike, with a hot air balloon ride for their fifth wedding anniversary, it was love at first flight. Within three weeks, he was volunteering with the crew. It wasn't long before Gliatti traded in his high power career for a high flying business as a commercial balloon pilot.

This year Gliatti-and several other balloon pilots-will compete during the MidFirst Ohio Challenge, an annual hot air balloon competition held each July in Middletown. The challenge, which started in 2003, attracts more than 70,000 visitors annually who come to watch the balloons compete, along with other activities that include skydiving demonstrations, live entertainment, a car show and carnival.

Discover Ohio balloon events that are fun for the whole family.

Buried Treasures: Adena's Heirloom Gardens

By: Barbara & Jerry Jividen

At Adena Mansion and Gardens, one of 59 Ohio Historical sites, heirloom plants kindle a nostalgic notion as part of its charm. The 1807 mansion originally featured impressive gardens, and still does. Today, three 20,000-square-foot gardens adorn the site, and more than 300 acres remain of Thomas Worthington's 2,000-acre homestead in Chillicothe.

Current gardens at Adena, brought about by major restoration efforts in 1953 and 2003, include a large flower garden, vegetable garden, and vineyard. Beyond the gardens is a grove of fruit-bearing trees. However, of all the plants, those known as "heirloom plants," are favorites at Adena.

Take a tour of these impressive gardens and find out how you can obtain your own Adena heirloom plants in the current issue.
